What electrical equipment do you test?

PAT tests are carried out on ‘Portable Appliances’ that can be moved, connected, and disconnected from an electrical supply. They would normally have a cable and a plug.

Common portable electrical equipment and appliances within a work environment might include laptops, PC desktop computers, printers, kettles, heaters, fans, lamps, microwaves, toasters, radios, TVs, projectors, etc. We would also PAT test occupational equipment including power tools, drills,  hair dryers, etc., and all extension leads, multi-way adaptors, and connector cables.

Larger equipment that utilises an electrical plug such as fridges, photocopiers, water coolers, vending machines, washing machines, etc. are also included. Mains wired appliances, such as cookers or electric showers are not PAT tested and need to be checked by a qualified electrician.

Portable electrical equipment normally falls into two categories: Class I and Class II devices, depending on the type of protection they offer the user. Both require regular PAT tests to ensure safety is maintained and are included in our PAT tests.

Pat testing, also known as portable appliance testing, is a process in which electrical appliances and equipment are checked to ensure that they are safe to use.

PAT testing is typically performed on portable appliances such as laptops, phones, power tools, printers, etc., and other portable electrical devices that are used in the workplace or in other public places.

During a pat test, a trained technician will examine the appliance to ensure that it is in good working order and that it meets all relevant safety standards. This may include checking the condition of the appliance, as well as testing its electrical components to ensure that they are functioning correctly.

PAT Test Pass

The frequency of pat testing depends on the type of appliance and the environment in which it is used. In some cases, pat testing may be required on a regular basis, such as every six months or annually. In other cases, pat testing may only be required when an appliance is first installed or after it has undergone repairs. Overall, pat testing is an important part of ensuring the safety of electrical appliances and equipment, and can help to prevent accidents and injuries caused by faulty or damaged equipment. If an appliance fails a pat test, it will typically be marked with a sticker or tag indicating that it is unsafe to use until it has been repaired or replaced.
