PAT Testing

PAT Tester
Portable appliance testing, or pat testing, is an essential process for ensuring the safety and functionality of electrical appliances and equipment. Whether you’re a business owner, property manager, or simply responsible for maintaining a home or office, it’s important to understand the importance of pat testing and how it can help protect you and others from potential accidents and injuries.

So, what is pat testing?

In a nutshell, it’s a process in which trained technicians use specialized equipment to test electrical appliances and equipment for safety and functionality. This includes visually inspecting the appliance for any obvious signs of damage or wear, and using equipment to test the continuity of the electrical circuit, insulation, and earth bond resistance.

Pat testing is typically carried out on a regular basis, such as annually or every few years, depending on the type and use of the appliance. It’s important to keep appliances and equipment in good working order to prevent accidents and injuries, and to ensure that they are safe for use. In some industries, such as healthcare and hospitality, pat testing is required by law or regulations to ensure the safety of employees and customers.

So, why is pat testing important? For starters, it helps identify any potential issues with appliances and equipment that could lead to accidents or injuries. This could include frayed cords, broken plugs, or malfunctioning switches. By identifying and fixing these issues before they become a problem, pat testing helps prevent accidents and injuries.

Pat Testing

In addition to ensuring the safety of those using the appliances and equipment, pat testing is also important for protecting the integrity of the equipment itself. Appliances and equipment that are not properly maintained or tested can break down or malfunction, leading to costly repairs or replacements. By conducting regular pat testing, you can help extend the life of your equipment and save money in the long run.

Overall, pat testing is an essential process for ensuring the safety and functionality of electrical appliances and equipment. Whether you’re a business owner, property manager, or simply responsible for maintaining a home or office, it’s important to understand the importance of pat testing and make it a part of your regular maintenance routine.

R
THE MANUAL PAT TEST - using Portable Appliance Tester equipment

This device tests each appliance individually for earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance, etc. The PAT device will show if the electrical appliance has passed or failed the PAT test.

The appliance will then receive a pass or fail sticker and the results recorded in our log for future reference.

Electrical appliances that fail the PAT test must not be used and should be removed immediately, either to be repaired or replaced. If the appliance is repaired, it must pass another PAT test before it is safe to use again.

R
A VISUAL INSPECTION - of all electrical appliances, plugs, and cables.

As well as the manual PAT test, a formal visual inspection of the equipment is carried out. This may require the equipment to be turned off and unplugged before beginning the visual inspection.  Our checklist includes:

The plug – We look for any signs of damage, including cracks, burns or bent pins, and check that the wiring and fuse is correct.

The cable – We check the cable visually and also check it physically for any damage, including fraying, cuts, exposed wiring or abrasions.

The appliance – We check for any obvious damage, including cracks, burns, or corrosion and check for wear and tear in the casing.
